When Dieting Does Not Work

Why Dieting May Not Be Your Answer

Obesity is a growing problem that is spreading through the world. The USA is suffering more than most.  A huge money-making industry has sprung up to cater for the thousands of people who want to lose weight. You can choose from hundreds of diets that claim to be the answer to your weight loss problems. Perhaps you have tried but found that dieting does not work. That is because dieting is only one part of losing weight.

Rapid weight loss diet plans

Diets can be used for emergency weight loss, if you are looking for a quick fix. Perhaps you have an important event approaching like a wedding and want to shed pounds fast. That is OK and you can indeed lose weight and get the results you want.

However after that special event when you revert back to your normal diet, what happens? You will find the pounds pile back and you’ll be back where you started. You may decide to give up and accept you are just meant to be fat. Or you may try another diet that is in the media as the diet of the day.

You can avoid this happening if you adjust your mindset and do things slightly differently. If you have discovered that on it’s own dieting does not work, you need to make some changes.

First off you need to stay away from the fad diets that promise unrealistic weight loss in a week. More importantly you need to realize that a diet alone is not the answer.

If dieting does not work for you adjust your thinking. Realize you need to combine any diet plan with other weight loss techniques. There are two main areas that you need to incorporate, and they are exercise and mindset.

Exercise to lose weight

It’s true that the majority of your results will be related to what you eat. However adding exercise and strength training in to your life will speed up results. Regular exercise will burn more calories. Also toning your muscles will mean they burn more calories even after you stop a training session.

Any aerobic exercise will help. There are reasons why walking is better than jogging. So don’t think you need to become an elite athlete. Another fun way to build exercise in to your life is to take up dancing. You can choose from whatever appeals the most. Salsa, jive, zumba are all popular choices.

Cycling is another activity that anyone can do. Whatever you choose, just find a way to get active.

Mindset and lifestyle changes when dieting does not work

Diets come and go in fashion and popularity. Most of the fad diets are not usually long-lasting and any weight loss is usually temporary. If you shed weight quickly there is a good chance of putting that weight back on or worse adding even more pounds.

A better way is to make a permanent change to your lifestyle. Find a healthy eating plan that suits you so you can make a permanent change to your eating habits.

Lifestyle changes you can make include:

Giving up junk food which is just empty calories. Ditch the chips, cookies and sweets.

Use a smaller plate. This will encourage you to eat smaller portions.

If you are a comfort eater then find a healthier replacement for your usual “naughty” food. Replace cookies with fruit or keep some carrot sticks in the fridge.

Drink a glass of water 30 minutes before every meal. This will help your stomach feel full.

Stay hydrated. Drink water regularly throughout the day. Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger.

Include more fiber-rich foods in your meals. Again these will help you feel full. Eat more vegetables.

If you are tempted by fast food restaurants when out walking then change your route so you don’t pass them.

Reduce stress

Try to reduce your stress levels. Mental and physical stress cause your body to react by retaining weight and makes it harder to shift those unwanted pounds.Stress can also make it more likely you will become depressed and you may then turn to comfort eating.

Lack of adequate sleep can stress out your body. Lack of sleep has been shown to result in weight gain. You want to aim for 7 hours sleep each night.

Wanting to lose weight is admirable. There are many health reasons why you need to maintain a healthy weight. Just remember that if your dieting is not working then you need to look at the reasons why.  Do not just rely on diet alone. Modify your habits, change your lifestyle and combine that with a change to smaller portions of healthy food.
